Formula 1 is discussing expanding the points zone.
At the last meeting of the F1 Commission, they raised the issue of awarding points not to the ten best drivers at the end of each race, but to 12, from 2025. The series, teams and the FIA did not make a decision, taking a pause for discussion.
At the Miami Grand Prix, the team bosses admitted that the points zone could be expanded to cover the entire peloton.
I think it`s reasonable to change the points system, but the question is where we go - whether [points are awarded] to 12 cars, 14, 16 or all, - said Williams` boss James Vowles.
Aston Martin`s Mike Krack said something similar:
In my opinion, the time has really come to do this. Personally, I believe that all battles should be fought for some kind of reward.
I think there is a consensus in the F1 Commission that we want changes, but there is no need to rush, so as not to make changes again later.
McLaren chief executive Zac Brown supported the idea of awarding points to 20 drivers:
I suppose you can make a case for points for everyone. Of course, this is a major change.
When points are at stake, every overtaking becomes more important. Some cars go into pits to save parts - this would never happen again.
So there is an argument for points for the entire grid - and certainly no less than 12 cars.
